Montreal’s public transit agency (STM) announced Thursday the closure of the Jeanne-Mance entrance at the Place-des-Arts Metro station after an inspection revealed “significant deterioration” in parts of the concrete.
The Société de transport de Montréal explained that the closure, which will remain in effect indefinitely, is a precautionary measure while structural work is conducted.
The STM says the inspection showed deterioration of the concrete in the slab and beams of the entrance, adding that it was likely caused by de-icing salt and water over the years.
“We will act swiftly to carry out the necessary repairs, but this event reminds us of the importance of maintaining our infrastructure,” said Éric Alan Caldwell, Chair of the STM’s board of directors, in a news release.
“The needs are urgent, which is why we continue to request the funds necessary to maintain our assets and ensure a reliable and efficient metro network.”
The Annual Infrastructure Management Plan (PAGI) confirmed that the proportion of STM assets in poor condition has increased from 23 per cent to 39 per cent in 2025, according to the transit agency.
The Place-des-Arts Metro station, which remains open and accessible through three other entrances, received a “D” grade in the report.
In some good news for transit users, the Bleury entrance, previously closed to enhance security, will be reopened on Monday, pending the completion of some minor work the STM noted.
According to the transit agency, around 19,000 users pass through the Place-des-Arts station daily on weekdays.
