Longueuil to add 150 speed bumps to slow traffic, increase safety

The city of Longueuil on Montreal's South Shore plans to add 150 speed bumps and a lot of construction this summer.

The City of Longueuil will be adding 150 speed bumps to improve road safety and slow traffic in residential areas and near busy places such as schools and parks.

The measure was announced on Wednesday as part of the ‘My Street for All’ project and the ‘Speed ​​Bump Construction Program,’ and is part of planned work.

There are currently only six permanent speed bumps in the area, so the move “represents a real small revolution in terms of traffic calming,” said the city.

The city is also continuing to deploy its ‘School Zone Safety Program,’ adding road markings, improved signage, bike paths and traffic adjustments at Claude-Lafortune, Paul-de-Maricourt and Marcelle-Robidoux schools.

Longueuil is also planning several major infrastructure projects, which could disrupt traffic. Measures will be implemented to mitigate the impacts, the city said.

“The state of municipal infrastructure calls for clear choices, and Longueuil has decided to focus on maintaining and repairing what it already has,” stated Sylvain Lambert, a member of the executive committee, adding the project is also “preparing a more resilient, greener, and more pleasant place to live for future generations, in addition to being financially responsible.”

A total of 34 sections and local roads will be repaved by the end of October, including Roland-Therrien, Marie-Victorin, Jacques-Cartier West, Curé-Poirier East, Kimber, Édouard, Vauquelin and Sir-Wilfrid-Laurier boulevards.

Several parks will also be redeveloped, including Quevillon, Mégantic, D.-E.-Joyal (phase 1), Immaculée-Conception, Belcourt, and Roberval parks.
