Montreal police (SPVM) has arrested a 36-year-old suspect following a robbery at a dépanneur in the Verdun borough last September.

The man was arrested in Verdun on March 29 and was subsequently released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

His release was subject to several conditions.

According to police, on Sept. 3, the suspect allegedly entered the store and punched the clerk before grabbing the cash register drawer and fleeing on foot.

A wanted notice was issued by the SPVM on March 28.

Police say there are several things business owners can do to protect their establishments from theft, including:

  • Place the cash register in a location where it can be seen from the outside
  • Avoid placing signs or displays that obstruct the view into the store
  • Have an alarm system in place
  • Install a video surveillance system
  • Make deposits at different times, especially at night
  • Only keep a small amount of cash in the cash register
  • Make sure the address is clearly visible at the front and back of the building

The SPVM is also urging business owners not to fight back, and to hand over any money during a robbery to minimize the risk of injury.
