A 34-year-old man is in hospital after a shooting in downtown Montreal early Friday morning.

Montreal police (SPVM) received a 911 call at 2:30 a.m. about the attempted murder on Sainte-Catherine Street near de la Montagne Street.

“Officers who were patrolling in the downtown area saw an individual open fire and flee on foot,” said Mariane Allaire Morin, a spokesperson with Montreal police.

She said officers quickly pursued the suspect—a 48-year-old man—and arrested him at the scene.

“The victim had gunshot wounds to the upper body,” added Allaire Morin.

He was transported to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The suspect remains in custody.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.
