To mark International Women’s Day, Quebec author and scholar Chantal Ringuet reimagined the Montreal metro map, renaming each station after a prominent woman in the city.

The author created the map with the help of the Université de Montréal and the Société de transport de Montréal (STM)

“We wanted to present an alternative map of the metro station of Montreal with all women’s names in order to recognize their very important contribution to the city,” Ringuet said in an interview.

Currently, only three metro stations are named after women: Villa-Maria, Côte-Sainte-Catherine and Square-Victoria.

The new map includes figures such as former Supreme Court Judge Louise Arbour, Myra Cree, a Mohawk activist who later became a top news anchor at Radio-Canada and businesswoman Ida Steinberg, the founder of the Steinberg grocery chain, among many others.

The map will be displayed in metro stations.
