Québec solidaire proposing higher taxes on large fortunes and public grocery stores

Québec solidaire (QS) wants to impose higher taxes on large fortunes. This is one of the proposals to be debated by party activists at their conference this weekend as they prepare their election manifesto.

On Saturday morning, the approximately 350 delegates from the left-wing political party will discuss measures addressing the cost of living and the redistribution of wealth. In particular, they will consider setting up a national network of non-profit public grocery stores and also introducing “a progressive tax on the portion of large fortunes exceeding $25 million.”

At a press briefing on Saturday morning, spokespersons Ruba Ghazal and Sol Zanetti emphasized the importance of increasing taxation on the wealthiest to support public services.

“We need to take money from the pockets of multimillionaires and put it towards measures that will genuinely improve the daily lives of the majority of Quebecers,” said Ghazal.

QS denies seeking to harm entrepreneurs or prevent the wealthiest from getting richer through such a measure.

“It’s a small contribution we’ll be asking of them that will make a huge difference to Quebec society. For them, it’s pocket money. It won’t change the quality of the bottle of wine they’ll take out of their cellar on a Friday evening,” argued Zanetti.

According to QS’s calculations, the introduction of a progressive tax on the portion exceeding $25 million would bring in $5 billion a year for the government.
