Many were stunned watching the heated exchange between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday over the war with Russia.
Michael Shwec, the president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in Quebec, was one of them.
“I’m quite shocked at the behavior of Trump and [JD] Vance. If anything, think that was one of the most disgraceful things I’ve ever seen, and quite unpresidential, attacking President Zelenskyy the way he did,” Shwec said in a recent interview.
Shwec added that it was clear that Trump does not want to help Ukraine win the war. Moreover, he also argued that at best, what Trump was seeking was a ceasefire and a minerals deal.
“This is what Ukrainians are thinking. Why would Ukraine cede anything to Russia? You see, if Russia stops fighting, the war is over. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine is over,” Shwec explained.
“And ceding territory is not the answer because there are millions of people there, Ukrainians, who are being subjugated right now.”
