A march in Montreal for trans rights, entitled the “trans day of vengeance,” ended in at least one arrest Monday night.
The demonstration started at 7:30 p.m. at Place Vauquelin on Notre-Dame Street near Place Jacques-Cartier.
According to Montreal police (SPVM), some people marching started setting fireworks into the air about half an hour into the event.
The force says people then started throwing objects, including paint, at the officers.
Police retaliated with tear gas to disperse the crowd, adding that one person was arrested for obstructing the officers.
There were no reported injuries during the event, and the demonstration was considered over by 8:30 p.m.
At least two shop windows and a car were damaged, according to Montreal police.
