Montreal-area woman launches ‘Doo Doo Decals’ to prevent unwanted dog droppings in garbage bins

Vaudreuil-Dorion resident Nicole Ayalon has started a small business, based on dog business.

Ayalon, a dog owner herself, designed two types of stickers for people’s garbage bins. They say, “dog poo is welcome here” and “no poo please.”

“People want to show their preferences, so I’m all for that,” she told CTV News.

Ayalon was inspired by a post she saw in a West Island Facebook group.

It said, “Just a reminder to dog owners…please be respectful and bring your dog poop home with you.”

The post goes on to say not everyone leaves their trash can outside and the person doesn’t want their garbage smelling “because you felt entitled to use anyone’s garbage instead of bringing it home.”

The divisive post generated 195 comments -- before the feature was turned off -- about whether or not it’s ok to leave dog droppings in someone else’s garbage.

After seeing the debate, Ayalon said, “I just thought to myself, OK, well, it bothers some people, but it doesn’t bother other people. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way of identifying who is who?”

That’s when she created the stickers, available in both French and English, for $7 each.

“Initially, I was going to personally hand-deliver them to whoever orders. But then I realized there is actually a lot of interest.”

In a matter of days, her website Doo-Doo Decals received 200 orders, including from Joseph Henry Passineau.

“It’s not pleasant to carry around. So, yeah, if some neighbours will have those stickers on their garbage bins, that’d be super helpful. And I think it’s a very smart initiative.”

Despite demand, Ayalon says she’s not quitting her real job.

“I’m very excited to keep the peace in the neighbourhood. So, hopefully when people have the stickers, we won’t have this discussion anymore.”
