A 54-year-old man is in hospital after being assaulted in Montreal’s Le Plateau-Mont-Royal borough early Monday morning.

Montreal police (SPVM) received several 911 calls at 1:30 a.m. about the incident near Parc Avenue and Milton Street.

“When the police arrived on the scene, the paramedics were already taking charge of the victim,” said Caroline Chèvrefils, a spokesperson with Montreal police.

He was transported to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

“Following searches carried out by police, a suspect was arrested near the scene at 3:40 a.m.,” Chèvrefils notes.

The 34-year-old was transported to a detention centre, where he is expected to meet with investigators.

“According to the first information, the suspect would have assaulted the victim with physical force,” Chèvrefils adds.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unknown.
