153 km/h in an 80 zone leads to Hwy. 63 stunt driving charge

Ontario Provincial Police stopped a vehicle officers say was travelling 153 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Highway 63, northeast of North Bay, last week.

As a result of the Dec. 10 traffic stop, the driver, a 35-year-old from Powassan, has been charged with stunt driving and will appear in court at a later date.

Court-imposed penalties for stunt driving may include a fine of up to $10,000, a driver’s licence suspension of up to three years and/or up to six months in jail. Drivers face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 upon conviction. Motorist convicted of stunt driving may also face six demerit points, higher insurance costs and a mandatory driver improvement course.

Immediate penalties

Under provincial legislation, immediate roadside consequences for a stunt driving charge include a 14-day vehicle impoundment and a 30-day driver’s licence suspension.

These measures were applied by police following the stop.

Police issue public reminder

In a social media post following the incident, OPP urged drivers to obey speed limits.

“Please slow down and drive responsibly, speeding puts everyone at risk,” said Const. Kyler Brouwer.
