While people in Sudbury are still reeling from the news of the devastating crash on a local highway New Year's morning, police have now released the names of the people that were killed in the incident.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say three siblings, all young children from the Greater Sudbury community of Chelmsford, are the victims of the deadly crash that happened on Hwy. 17 between Regional Road 55 and Highway 144 Wednesday around 9 a.m.

They say brothers 11-year-old Destiny Osagie and 10-year-old Flourish Osagie were pronounced dead at the scene, and their six-year-old sister, Britney Osagie, later succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

Two 45-year-old females and a 10-year-old boy, also of Chelmsford, survived the crash.

OPP Constable Michelle Coulombe says a 2007 Honda Accord carrying the children and their mothers from two local Nigerian families were on their way home when the car left the road and hit a rock cut.

The 10-year-old boy, described as a friend of the Osagie family, remains in hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. His mother sustained minor injuries and has already been released from hospital.

The mother of the three children who perished was driving the car and was uninjured.

Coulombe says both families have called the region hom for some time and although the investigation is still in its very early stages, police have already discovered that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

"Reconstructionists are still waiting to do an examination of the vehicle. And apparently, because it's an older vehicle, it will take a little longer to get some answers," said Coulombe.

No charges have been laid in the case and police would not comment on whether any are anticipated.
