Efforts to reduce impaired driving in the northeast seem to be working in some communities – provincial police say stats are still high.

Provincial police have charged a 20-year-old from Hearst following a 911 call reporting a suspected impaired driver last weekend.

Members of the James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Government Road in Kapuskasing shortly after 2:20 a.m. on Feb. 22, after responding to a report from a concerned citizen about a possible impaired driver.

“Upon investigation, they determined the driver had consumed an intoxicating substance and placed them under arrest,” said police in a news release.

“The individual was transported to the Cochrane OPP detachment for further testing.”

As a result of the investigation, the 20-year-old driver faces two impaired driving charges.

In addition to the charges, the accused also had their licence suspended for 90 days and per provincial regulations the vehicle involved was impounded by police for seven days at the owner’s expense.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in court in on March 17 to answer the charges.
