Environment Canada issued air quality alerts for much of northern Ontario on Sunday as wildfire smoke blanketed the region, reducing visibility and posing health risks.

An air quality warning is in effect for much of northwestern Ontario, with officials cautioning that while conditions may temporarily improve, pollution levels could rise again by evening. A special air quality statement was also issued for most of northeastern Ontario, where westerly winds are carrying smoke from active wildfires.

Health risks worsen as smoke lingers

“Westerly winds will bring smoke from forest fires over northern Ontario to the area, causing the air quality to deteriorate,” the statement read.

“The poor air quality will persist through tonight and possibly Monday before improving.”

Health officials warned that vulnerable groups – including seniors, pregnant individuals, young children, people with chronic illnesses, and outdoor workers – should avoid strenuous activities outside.

“During heavy smoke conditions, everyone’s health is at risk regardless of their age or health status,” the advisory stated.

Symptoms and safety precautions

Common symptoms from smoke exposure include eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and mild coughs, while more severe reactions may involve wheezing, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. Residents are urged to seek medical help if symptoms worsen.

To minimize exposure, authorities recommended staying indoors with windows and doors closed, using air purifiers, and wearing N95 masks if going outside.

“If you must spend time outdoors, limit the time as much as possible,” said Environment Canada in its alerts.

Officials also advised checking on at-risk neighbours and following local public health guidance.
