“Monday was our first game of the tournament, started out fantastic,” said Frank DeMarco, the tournament director

“We had a great turnout. We have some new teams this year, so the tournament is growing every year. It’s been a really good turnout.”

DeMarco said the goal behind the scholarship fund is to encourage NOSM graduates to practice medicine in Northern Ontario.

“Whether it’s a community like Sault Ste. Marie that we can help, or Sudbury or North Bay, Timmins, anybody in our northern community,” he said.

Donations are still being counted, but DeMarco said the tournament has so far raised more than $460,000 as of early Saturday afternoon – well on the way to their fundraising goal of $500,000.

The hockey games were not the only excitement for the city or Algoma Steel on Saturday after an early morning collapse of a pipe at the steelmaker’s coke-processing mill resulted in abnormal air emissions and the discharge of liquid waste into St. Marys River.
