Batchewana First Nation warns of fraudulent status cards circulating in the region

Published:

The leadership of Batchewana First Nation and local police are warning residents and businesses of reports of fraudulent status cards circulating in the region.

Batchewana First Nation and its police service are alerting local residents, businesses and program managers about a recent surge in reports involving the use and manufacturing of fraudulent status cards in the area.

Batchewana First Nation Police have confirmed the confiscation of two counterfeit cards and are urging the public to remain vigilant.

“Using and manufacturing a fake status card is a criminal offense, and individuals using these cards can be charged with fraud and forgery,” said Batchewana First Nation officials in a news release posted to social media.

The fraudulent cards have reportedly been used by individuals attempting to access services provided by the First Nation. Program managers have encountered several instances of such attempts, prompting leadership to issue a warning to local businesses and service providers.

“Batchewana leadership advises local businesses to be on the lookout for fraudulent cards. They are very recognizable to anyone familiar with an authentic status card,” said Batchewana police.

“These cards are flimsy, are not signed by an authorized person, and often the picture does not match the person presenting it.”

The First Nation is working closely with local law enforcement to address the issue and prevent further misuse of counterfeit cards. Residents and businesses are encouraged to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity to help curb this criminal activity.
