The annual event NYE Fireworks on the Lake raises money for local charities with a huge fireworks display on New Year’s Eve over Lake Timiskaming in Haileybury, Ont.

Organizers describe the project as “uniting our community for a cause” on their social media page and said, “(they) aim to make a lasting impact.”

This year the organizing team has been busy collecting food and funds for local food banks in Haileybury, Cobalt and New Liskeard.

Last year the event raised more than $25,000 for cancer care in the area.

“This year we were hoping to come close to it – it is a very tight year overall for everybody,” said Soutar.

"We're just approaching the $20,000.”

Walsh said she thinks they have just gone over $20,000.

Sunday should be an explosive night as the group rings in the New Year with a blast.

With support from the City of Temiskaming Shores the group will not be lighting up just one spot this year, there will be fireworks at both Haileybury and New Liskeard beachfronts.

Residents of the area are also encouraged to join in the festivities and light their fireworks alongside the city and volunteers.

"It's super exciting,” said Soutar.

“I was a bit nervous about what the final donations would be but knowing we hit the 20 (thousand)… that to me is very successful on such a tight year."

The pair said donations are continuing to come in and there is a bin set up at the North Cobalt Flea Market.

Donations can also be made by cheque directly to the food bank of an individual’s choice or by e-transfer.
