Environment Canada is forecasting a sharp temperature drop Tuesday morning which is expected to create icy hazards.

Flash freeze warnings have been issued in the northeast from Chapleau to Temiskaming Shores and the communities in between.

Shortly before 8 a.m., the temperature in Timmins had dropped to -12 C, but feels more like -23 C with the windchill.

“Ponding water, slush, and any falling precipitation will freeze as the temperature drops,” the weather alert said.

“This may have an impact on the morning commute. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.”

Highway 11 closed

Meanwhile, Highway 11 is closed from Hearst to Longlac on Tuesday morning, Ontario Provincial Police said on social media.

“Treacherous weather and driving conditions,” prompted the closure shortly after 1 a.m.

Hearst is expected to see a high of -5 C Tuesday and a low of -21 C with mostly cloudy conditions throughout the day.

As of 8 a.m., it was -16 C in Hearst, but when accounting for the windchill, it feels more like -25 C.
