As residents of northern Ontario continue to endure the highest gas prices in the province, NDP MPPs from the region proposed a one-time $200 rebate in addition to the temporary reduction of gas taxes.
The MPPs were hoping to debate the motion at Queen's Park, but the Ontario NDP party said in a news release the Ford government blocked the vote on it Monday.
"Ford must allow the debate in the legislature. He must allow MPPs to vote on this motion and let their communities know where they stand. This is especially true for northern cabinet ministers, Greg Rickford, Ross Romano, and Vic Fedeli," Ontario NDP Deputy Leader and Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof said in a news release.
"We call on these three members to tell Doug Ford to allow the vote. Northerners need relief now, and the Ford government should let us vote."
On April 4, the Ford government introduced legislation to temporarily cut the gas tax by 5.7 cents per litre and the fuel tax by 5.3 cents per litre for six months from July 1 to Dec. 31.
