French River looks for solutions to waste management issues

Waste management issues continue in French River The mayor of French river says both city council and the community are split on the options available for garbage collection.

Waste management continues to be a problem for the northern Ontario community of French River – and the solutions appear to be up for debate.

Municipal councillors discussed various options for moving forward this week given the current legislation and the age of the municipality's infrastructure.

Several options were presented during the meeting – including replacing everything to contracting out the work or providing curbside pick-up.

Mayor Gisèle Pageau told CTV News that opinions are not just split on council but across the community.

“People, more residential people or more seasonal people, do not want – and those living on the river do not want to have curbside pick up because it will bring in animals,” she said.

“People leave and then their garbage is left at the end of the road for a few days and we all know what happens with that."

City officials said there are plans in the works for a public engagement session on the issues and the subject is set to return to the council chambers on Nov. 15.
