In what police are call proof the system needs repairs, almost half of people North Bay police checked on were violating bail conditions.

A French River man, 27, is facing several charges including impaired driving after police were notified he removed his court-ordered ankle monitor Tuesday night.

Officers at the Nipissing West (Sudbury) detachment were alerted around 10:50 p.m. April 15 that the man fled a residence on William Street after removing his monitoring device.

“Police located and stopped the vehicle, which was travelling north on Highway 69,” Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Wednesday.

“The driver was arrested for the bail violation and was also found to be impaired.”

In addition to impaired driving, he is also charged with having a blood alcohol level of 80+, dangerous operation, driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor and failing to comply with both a release and probation order.

He was held in custody pending a bail court appearance scheduled for Wednesday in Sudbury.

His driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle has been impounded for a week.

“The OPP would like to remind the public that if you see a possible impaired driver on our roadways, waterways, or trails, please ‘Make the Call,’ and dial 911,” police said.

“Impaired driving never ends well, please plan a way to get home safely.”
