Greater Sudbury honours its volunteers

Sudbury — Each year, Greater Sudbury recognizes community volunteers through Civic Awards. The awards are presented to people and groups who consistently give back to the community.

In a news release Thursday, the city said the Civic Awards "promote and reward leadership, humanitarian service and enrichment of the human spirit through volunteerism and community involvement."

“Each year, the City of Greater Sudbury remains committed to recognizing one of our community’s greatest assets,” Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger is quoted as saying in the release.

“Our volunteers are dedicated and devoted to giving back. Their leadership and involvement make a real difference in our community, and we thank them for their outstanding service.”

The following are recipients of 2020 Civic Awards:

Group recipients:

- Sudbury Game and Fish Protective Association

- Breast Screening and Assessment Volunteers – Health Sciences North Sudbury

- Sudbury Regional Science Fair Committee

- YMCA Women’s Wellness Weekend Volunteer Committee

- Frontier College – Louis Street After-school Tutoring Program

- Minnow Lake Lions Club

Individual recipients:

- Melissa Pilon, Dorothy Moorcraft, Barb Kiley, Lilly Noble, Jacqueline Doucet, Keith King, Lynn McMurray, Frank and Nicole McAlpine

The annual Civic Awards recognition evening, originally scheduled for April 23, was postponed due to COVID-19.

"We look forward to recognizing these volunteers in person when it is safe to do so," the release said.
