The Sudbury Performance Group will soon be using the 400-seat performance centre at College Boreal for various acts, including comedy, musical and theatre.
“Six new music genres and four new performance genres and we’re planning on doing those up to six a year on a season ticket basis,” said Ron Goswell of the Sudbury Performance Group.
“(There are) 150 seats on the floor and the other seats will be general admission -- normal theatre seating up on the second level. So the date night group is going to have a very romantic atmosphere. You will have dinner stage side on the main floor where you will have the show and an after-party.”
The organization will also be connecting well-known touring artists with local upcoming talent as a way to help guide them to where they want to be.
“We videotape their opening act -- multiple cameras, beautiful sound -- and that is presented to them for part of their portfolio,” he said.
“Secondly, the mentoring piece where they get the ‘we were the opening act’ and then we sit down after the show (and) we do the mentoring, they get the chance to ask all the questions they want.”
Sudbury MPP Jamie West announced the funding as a way to support the group’s initiatives.
“The funding announcement from Ontario Trillium Foundation was $44,300,” West said.
“This allows SPG to upgrade their equipment and to provide more services to streaming and reach outside of Sudbury. Part of the formula they’re blending is having emerging artists working with existing talent and so the possibility for emerging talent to be seen outside of Sudbury is just amazing news for all the performers in Sudbury.”
To kick things off, Chantal Kreviazuk will be performing Dec. 8 at Boreal. General admission tickets are available online.
