Environment Canada has issued a heavy rainfall warning for North Bay, Powassan and Mattawa, with heavy rainfall expected to combine with melting snow.
Rainfall amounts near 25 mm are possible, the warning said, beginning Friday and into Saturday.
“Scattered rain showers today will develop into more widespread rain tonight,” Environment Canada said.
“Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
The Ministry of Natural Resources in the North Bay District said a flood outlook bulletin is in effect in the district until May 2.
Shoreline conditions
“Residents in the North Bay District area should keep a close watch on conditions and exercise caution around lakes, rivers, and streams,” the MNR said.
“Warmer spring temperatures combined with the rainfall forecasted on Friday and Saturday is likely to impact low-lying areas which have a history of flooding. Shoreline and ice conditions are also expected to be impacted.”
A flood outlook is issued to give early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts calling for heavy rain, snow melt, high winds or other conditions.
A high-pressure system is expected to move across the region Friday evening through to Saturday.
The five-day total precipitation accumulation ranges from 15-35 mm, the MNR said. Daytime temperatures should range between 7-17C, with nighttime temperatures ranging from below freezing up to 9C.
“Water levels across the district are within normal ranges for this time of year, however, flows in rivers, streams and creeks have increased with the recent spring weather and are expected to react accordingly to the forecasted rainfall,” the MNR said.
“Throughout most of the district, the ground is saturated and has little capacity to absorb any moisture from runoff or rainfall. Warm temperatures and forecasted rain will accelerate snowmelt where there is snowpack remaining, increasing the amount of runoff reaching watercourses.”
While significant flooding isn’t expected, rain and melting snow could result in flooding in low-lying areas with a history of flooding.
Spanish River flood watch
Elsewhere in the north, a flood watch is in effect for low-lying areas near the Spanish River – including Espanola, Sagamok, Townships of Nairn-Hyman and Sables-Spanish River.
“Local streams and rivers will continue to see increased flows and ongoing high-water levels due to the recent warmer weather and precipitation,” the MNR said.
“There is the potential for flooding in low-lying areas and residents may wish to take necessary action to secure or protect property in flood-prone or vulnerable areas.”
