Man seen loitering in Cochrane facing break-and-enter, theft charges

A northern Ontario man hauling around sleds of items he told police he “found” in Cochrane is facing several break-and-enter and theft-related charges, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a news release.

On Feb. 1 around 10 p.m., officers with James Bay OPP saw someone loitering in a commercial parking lot on Third Avenue in Cochrane.

Police said the person was moving between trailers and storage containers with two sleighs filled with items the suspect told officers they’d found.

After an investigation, police said they determined a cargo trailer on the property had been broken into and items had been stolen.

As a result, the 33-year-old man local man was arrested and charged with theft, breaking-and-entering, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of break-in instruments, break of recognizance and failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb 25.

Some of the stolen items have already been claimed by their owners, said police, the remaining items are in the care of the OPP.

“If you believe you are missing items such as sleighs, tools, or outdoor clothing, please contact the OPP in Cochrane at 1-888-310-1122 to identify and claim them,” said police.
