Man seriously injured in Sudbury snowmobile crash charged with impaired

A 40-year-old man who was seriously injured in a snowmachine crash in a remote part of Greater Sudbury has been charged with impaired driving.

A 40-year-old man who had to be airlifted to hospital after a snowmachine crash near Wanapitei Lake Sunday night has been charged with impaired driving.

Fortunately, his 13-year-old passenger only received minor injuries.

Police and other emergency responders were called to the scene of the single-vehicle crash on West Bay Road just after 7:50 p.m., Sudbury police said in a news release Monday.

“Due to the location of the incident and the information provided, Greater Sudbury Fire Services, paramedic services and police service, as well as Ornge Ambulance (helicopter) were dispatched to the incident,” police said.

“Upon arrival, emergency responders located a 13-year-old, youth (passenger) who has sustained minor injuries and a 40-year-old, man (driver) who had sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.”

Signs of impairment

The youth was taken to hospital as a precaution, while the driver was airlifted to Health Sciences North.

“While speaking with the driver, officers detected signs of impairment,” police said.

“Based on the investigation, the 40-year-old man has been charged with impaired operation. He was released on a promise to appear.”

The investigation into the collision is ongoing and anyone with information related to the collision or video surveillance equipment that may have captured the incident on Wanapitei Lake is asked to contact police at 705-675-9171.
