‘My stomach sank’: Mom shocked no one stopped to help her son after hit-and-run, police investigating

Sudbury police are investigating what they're calling a hit-and-run, after a 13-year-old boy was struck while using a crosswalk on Municipal Road 80.

A Greater Sudbury, Ont., mother is speaking out after video shows her son was hit by a car in the middle of a crosswalk Wednesday afternoon and no one stopped to help as the driver got away.

“My child was hit by a car, as clear as day, in front of 30 people. Only one lady got out to help him and as a human, that breaks my heart,” Chelsey Borsi told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an interview Friday.

“It’s one thing to be hit by a car, it’s another thing to have no one help you.”

Greater Sudbury Police Service confirmed it is investigating the hit-and-run that happened on MR80 – also known as Old Highway 69 – in the Val Caron area just before 4 p.m. Jan. 29.

While Borsi’s 13-year-old son Kristopher was lucky to walk away from the scene, she said he is dealing with a lot of pain.

Caught on video

Video obtained by CTV News shows three pedestrians waiting to cross the road after one – who has been identified as Kristopher – pushed the button to activate the crosswalk.

The video, which has nearly 300,000 views on social media, shows cars across the road stopping when he and his two friends enter the crosswalk.

While walking several steps ahead of his two friends, a vehicle hits him while his head is turned, knocking him to the ground.

The grey/silver car can be seen pulling over to the side of the road as his two friends rush to help him up.

While it can’t be seen on video, Borsi said the driver stuck her head out and said she would pull over at the Dollarama nearby but didn’t.

“We have video images … showing her heading towards Blezard Valley and clearly, not stopping,” she said.

The driver was described as an elderly woman.

‘Kristopher was in shock’

After the two boys helped their friend up, the video shows the trio walking back to the crosswalk button again and Kristopher is seen pressing it.

“Kristopher was in shock,” Borsi said.

The two friends called his mom to let her know what happened and one woman pulled over to check to see if he was OK.

“My stomach sank,” Borsi said.

“I just I feel sick to my stomach, still I can’t believe, like I understand things happen, but you don’t just leave a child o the road. You just don’t.”

Medical attention

Kristopher was seen by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital by ambulance.

Luckily, his mom said he has no internal bleeding or broken bones.

“Kristopher has whiplash, soft tissue damage in his leg, lower back and neck alongside a big bump on his head,” his mom said.

“He is in a lot of pain and truly just does not want to go outside right now.”

She added he is home and recovering, but will need physiotherapy and all three boys will need counselling.

“I can’t believe he walked away … It was a miracle. God was with us that day,” Borsi said.

“I want to make it very clear that accidents happen and we’re all just human. It’s what we do after that determines how human we really are and as a woman, I’m mortified that this lady just drove away.”

Duty to report

“Any collision involving a pedestrian should be reported to police immediately,” police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn told CTV News.

She said anyone with information related to the incident, including the driver’s identity, should contact police at 705-675-9171.

Borsi said several local businesses have been really supportive and helpful.

Sweet, thoughtful boy

While most parents think their children are terrific, Boris gave some examples showing the kind of kid Kristopher is.

“He’s the kind of kid that make sure his autistic brother has everything he needs,” she said.

“He’s the kind of kid that has $5 of his own money and buy something for a homeless person.”
