A 46-year-old has been charged with stunt driving and is accused of exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h.

In a social media post, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said the incident took place on Feb. 9 on Highway 17 near Marathon, Ont.

“Marathon OPP stopped a 46-year-old driver for speeding 144 km/h in a 90 km/h zone,” police said.

“The driver faces stunt driving charges, which carries serious consequences.”

Additional penalties

In addition to the charges, the accused also received a 30-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle involved was impounded for 14 days at the owner’s expense.

Court-imposed penalties for stunt driving may include a fine of up to $10,000, a driver’s licence suspension of up to three years and/or up to six months in jail. In Ontario, drivers face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 upon conviction.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court at a later date to answer the charge.

“Excessive speeding endangers lives,” said acting OPP Sgt. Hayley Mcleary.

“Drive safely and obey speed limits.”
