Northern Ont. defenceman shattering franchise, NOJHL records

Voodoos defenceman breaking records Powassan Voodoos defenceman Alex Little continues to break records as he rounds out the rest of the regular season in the NOJHL.

Alex Little, 20, is in the zone. Coming in hot off a record-setting year, he’s picking up right where he left off.

“Here I am still living the dream,” he quipped.

Little, who hails from Minden, Ont., is breaking all kinds of team milestones once thought unreachable. He set the Voodoos franchise record for single-season points as a defenceman and holds the franchise points record as a defenceman.

He broke the franchise record for points, passing Cameron Moore, who held the record with 92 points since 2019.

Last year, he was a first-team all-star and league-best blue liner as well as team MVP.

“Even in any organization, you never think you’d break any of the franchise records,” Little said.

Head coach Peter Goulet credits Little’s work ethic, describing him as a “Top 3” captain he’s worked with in his 20-year coaching career.

“Anytime you’re breaking records, it speaks to the person you are and the hockey player you are,” Goulet said.

“He was hurt for three months. It’s great to have him back. His commitment to this team, Powassan and the area has just been unbelievable. His teammates love him.”

In his third full season with the team, he has 13 points in 15 games. Last season, he recorded 58 points in 54 games.

Little and his teammates are still talking about the goal he scored near the end of the second period against the French River Rapids on Jan. 5. The score was 5-2 at the time and the Voodoos went on to win 9-2.

With the goal, he set the all time goal scoring record for a Voodoos defenceman. He said it’s a moment he’ll never forget.

“I had an unbelievable pass from Alex Case. He hit me back door,” Little recalled.

Surreal feeling

“It was the same as any other goal. I had no idea I was that close to the record until after the game. It was kind of a surreal feeling.”

His teammate and close friend Cameroon Lemcke was on the ice at the time.

“It was amazing to see, be a part of and be on the ice for,” the Voodoos forward said. “

He’s one of the most heads-up D-man I’ve ever seen. He moves the puck well and skates well.”

Despite breaking the individual records, Little’s mind is fully focused on the remainder of the season, saying the team always comes first.

“We came here, a lot us older guys, to win,” he said.

“The points records, I had no idea that any of that stuff was reachable. But we’re just going to grind it out and try to win the national championship.”
