A domestic disturbance call in Kapuskasing has resulted in impaired driving and assault charges for a local resident, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a news release.
At about 9 a.m. on Feb. 20, officers from the James Bay OPP detachment and Cochrane District Emergency Medical Services responded to a report of intimate partner violence in the northern Ontario community.
Authorities arrested an individual at the scene after determining they had assaulted their partner by grabbing them by the neck, according to the release.
“Further investigation revealed the accused had been operating a vehicle shortly before police arrived,” said police.
“The individual was transported to the Kapuskasing OPP detachment for further testing.”
As a result of the investigation, the 25-year-old local resident has been charged with spousal assault causing bodily harm and mischief in addition to two impaired driving charges – including having a blood alcohol concentration of more than 80.
In addition to the charges, the accused also had their licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle involved was impounded by police for seven days at the owner’s expense.
“Due to the intimate partner nature of the incident, the name of the accused will not be released to protect the victim’s identity,” police said.
The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in court in Kapuskasing in April.
