Northern Ont. traffic stop yields drugs, cash, gun: OPP

OPP seize more than $275,000 in suspected drugs, plus cash and a replica handgun, following a traffic stop.

A 36-year-old North York man is in custody facing multiple charges after Ontario Provincial Police seized suspected drugs with an estimated street value of more than $276,000 during a traffic stop last week.

Provincial police said officers conducting patrols on Government Road West pulled over a vehicle around 5 p.m. on June 14 in relation to a criminal investigation.

“The driver failed to identify was subsequently arrested for obstructing police,” the OPP said in a release.

“A search of the driver and vehicle resulted in the seizure of suspected cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, fentanyl, hydromorphone pills, oxycodone and other suspected drugs.”

OPP said officers also recovered $3,015 in cash and a replica handgun during the search.

The southern Ontario man has been charged with obstructing a peace officer, six drug trafficking offences, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of property obtained by crime and three counts of failing to comply with a release order.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on July 9.
