Here’s how the rain is impacting city facilities, construction

A foundation repair company says it could take weeks to get through the backlog of calls it's received about flooding and water damage.

The Edmonton area has received a near historic amount of rain this month, causing some flooding and prompting the closure of city facilities while the impacts are mitigated.

The City of Edmonton and Epcor asked residents on Sunday night to reduce water usage to ease the pressure on stormwater systems.

The advisory asked Edmontonians to take shorter showers, delay laundry and dishwasher use, and make sure sump pumps and downspouts are working well.

City of Edmonton closures

Sports fields and ball diamonds are closed. They will reopen as they dry, the city said.

The Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre at Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre is closed due to flooding.

Victoria and Riverside golf courses are open but carts are not available. Rundle Golf Course is closed and expected to reopen on Thursday.

All boat launches along the North Saskatchewan River are closed.

The following four trails are closed: Highlands-Dawson, Capilano-Gold Bar, Emily Murphy-Kinsmen and River Loop Trail adjacent to Fort Edmonton Park.

Construction and turf maintenance

Prolonged rain can affect some construction activities, the city said. Work like paving, excavation, earthworks and concrete placement may need to be postponed.

“The City and its contractors regularly adjust work plans to account for changing weather conditions and to make the best use of available construction time,” the city said in a release. “While June has brought significant rainfall, there are currently no significant project setbacks or weather-related financial impacts to date.”

Rain has also impacted mowing but crews are being rescheduled to mow turf as soon as possible.

What else?

The continued rain may mean more mosquitoes. As the rain slows down, city crews will resume the mosquito control spraying program.
