Northern Ontario man charged with attempted murder in IPV case

A 59-year-old East Ferris resident now faces a total of 12 criminal charges – including attempted murder – following an intimate partner violence incident that sent one person to hospital with serious injuries earlier this month.

Ontario Provincial Police said officers, along with the District of Nipissing Paramedic Services, responded to a report of an assault in East Ferris at about 12:10 a.m. on June 12.

Victim transported to hospital

“One individual was transported to hospital with serious injuries,” said OPP in a news release Monday.

Provincial police say a second individual fled in a vehicle prior to police arrival and was later involved in “a collision with a stationary vehicle.”

OPP said the driver was then taken into custody.

“As the matter involves intimate partner violence and to protect the identity of the victim, the name of the accused will not be released,” police said.

Charges, penalties

The accused now faces a total of 12 criminal charges; attempted murder, assault, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, breaking-and-entering a dwelling house with intent to commit a crime, impaired driving, dangerous driving, refusing to comply with a demand, mischief and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.

In addition to the charges, the accused’s driver’s licence was automatically suspended for 90 days and the vehicle involved was impounded for seven days.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in North Bay at a later date.

The investigation remains ongoing.
