Timmins — Joining police across the province, the Sudbury and Timmins police services held fundraisers to support the family of late RCMP Const. Heidi Stevenson, one of the victims of April’s mass shooting in Nova Scotia.
In Timmins, at least 15 first responders and family members took to Gillies Lake as part of Friday’s ‘Run On for NS Virtual 5K Run, Walk or Ride.’
The police service’s communications coordinator, Marc Depatie, said it’s a small gesture to show the wide-reaching impact of this type of tragedy.
“Regardless of the geographic distances between ourselves and Nova Scotia ... when one of our (police) agencies are suffering, the entire profession is suffering,” Depatie said. “This is an element of solidarity that allows officers to mark the memory of an officer who paid the ultimate sacrifice and in a community service-oriented way, we are demonstrating support for the surviving members of her family.”
Participants ran, walked or rode 5km at their own pace, ending with 25 push-ups — one for each year of Stevenson’s service.
Donations of $25 each go to the Peace Officer Memorial Ribbon Society, part of which funds scholarships for children of fallen officers.
