OPP lay second-degree murder charge in 2023 death in northwestern Ont.

Second-degree murder charges have been laid in connection with a suspicious death that occurred in Wauzhushk Onigum Nation in April 2023.

The death took place on Pow Wow Island Road on April 22, 2023. Kenora Ontario Provincial Police and Treaty Three Police Service responded to the call about a sudden death.

“One individual was pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

The victim was a 77-year-old man from Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls.

Held in custody

A 45-year-old from the Wauzhushk Onigum Nation has been charged with second-degree murder. He was held in custody ahead of a hearing Tuesday in the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora.

The investigation is continuing, with several OPP units assisting the Treaty Three Police Service with the case.

“The police would like to thank the community of Wauzhushk Onigum Nation for ... information that has assisted with the investigation,” the release said.
