Police say Hwy. 11 stunt driver was impaired by drugs, had weapons

A suspect from Alberta stopped for stunt driving on Highway 11 near Kapuskasing, Ont., is facing multiple criminal charges, including impaired driving and drug-related offences.

Patrolling officers spotted the vehicle around 3:30 p.m. March 26 on Highway 11 in Val Rita-Harty, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Tuesday.

They observed a vehicle traveling 144 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.

“Upon stopping the vehicle, officers determined the driver had been consuming drugs and placed them under arrest,” police said.

“A search of the individual and vehicle led to the seizure of suspected crystal methamphetamine, cannabis, multiple cellphones, a digital scale, a push dagger cane, and approximately $3,800 in Canadian currency.”

Drug, weapons, stunt driving

Once taken into custody, the driver refused to fully comply with a drug recognition evaluation at the detachment.

The 48-year-old from Lacombe, Alta., has been charged with driving while impaired by drugs, refusing to comply with a demand, drug trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, weapons offences, driving with cannabis readily available to the driver, stunt driving and driving with an insecure load.

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice on March 27 in Kapuskasing.

The driver received a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for two weeks.
