A 23-year-old who doesn’t have a driver’s licence has been charged with impaired driving and trying to flee police following an incident this week in Batchewana First Nation.

An officer with Batchewana First Nation Police Service was conducting a patrol just after midnight April 9 when a vehicle turned into the police parking lot on Nebenaigoching Street.

At that point, the driver did a quick U-turn in front of the police cruiser.

“A traffic stop was conducted, where the officer formed grounds to believe the driver was impaired by an intoxicating substance,” police said in a news release Friday.

Yelled an expletive

“The officer requested the driver’s documents, at which point they yelled an expletive at the officer and drove away.”

Two nearby officers with the Garden River Anishinabek Police Service stepped in to try and stop the vehicle again.

“The driver tried to flee by intentionally backing into one of the APS cruisers,” police said.

“The vehicle then drove into a nearby ditch, where officers arrested the driver.”

The suspect was arrested and taken to the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police detachment and tested for impaired driving.

Charges include fleeing police, dangerous driving, assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, driving without a licence and driving while impaired by alcohol and drugs.

The accused was held for a bail hearing and subsequently remanded into custody.

The accused was issued a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
