Snowmobiler dies after going into the water on Manitoulin Island

Rescuers retrieved the body of a victim Thursday in Little Current on Manitoulin Island after a snowmobiler went missing early in the morning.

Police have located a deceased person after their snowmobile went into the water near White’s Point in Little Current, Ontario Provincial Police said Thursday afternoon.

“The 48-year-old person was recovered from the water,” police said.

“They were transported to hospital by Air Ornge, where they were later confirmed deceased.”

OPP deployed resources to search for the missing snowmobiler Thursday morning after they were reported missing at 4:30 a.m. North Shore Search and Rescue was also deployed.

OPP units engaged in the search included the canine unit, the emergency response team, aviation services, Wikwemikong Surveillance, OPP underwater search and recovery unit, the joint rescue coordination centre and the Manitoulin crime unit.
