A Sault-area maple syrup producer is taking part in a province-wide celebration of the sweet treat. According to the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers’ Association, the first weekend in April is ‘Maple Weekend,’ and Hogan’s Homestead invited the community to celebrate at their sugar shack in Goulais River.
“We’re so excited to welcome the community and celebrate, of course, maple syrup,” said Erica Hogan, co-owner of Hogan’s Homestead.
“From taffy to shots of syrup, tours and everything in between. We’re here to celebrate liquid gold.”
Along with all-things-maple, there were other food and craft vendors from around the region taking part in Maple Weekend. Families took part in walking tours around the facility and were even treated to an up-close look at how syrup is made.

Maple syrup production season would typically be getting ready to wrap around this time, but Hogan said the unusual winter weather this year has prolonged the season.
“Last night we made about 11 barrels, which are 45 gallon drums, but we are in a delayed season,” she said.
“We’re probably only at 10 to 20 per cent of what we would normally do right now. With Mother Nature being our business partner, best or worst, it’s completely up to her. But, we are in a bit of a delayed season, especially with that snow we got yesterday.”
Hogan said the crew at the sugar shack will be spending the summer maintaining the syrup lines and taps and getting ready for next season.
