Author donates royalties to Sault charities Frank Sarlo, a retired lawyer in Sault Ste. Marie, has transferred all proceeds from a book he wrote to two local charities.

A retired lawyer in Sault Ste. Marie, Frank Sarlo, is donating all rights to a book he wrote to St. Vincent Place and Pauline’s Place.

Sarlo's book was released in October and is called, ‘A Special Place.’ It's all about the Sault and what he loves about his city

"As I went through my research, and started writing my book, the generosity and caring of our people came out loud and clear,” he said.

“When I did finish the book, I decided that it should be published, because it’s 100 per cent positive about Sault Ste. Marie."

All proceeds -- past and present -- from the book will go to the two local charities.

"We are really grateful that we're one of two that he chose and I think it does really fit that,” said Sara McCleary of St. Vincent Place.

“I've always said that the Sault really steps up when they know how to, and I think this is just one way that they're doing that."

Nearly 900 copies have been sold so far, amassing about $8,000 for the food bank and the women's shelter.

The book can be found at a number of Sault businesses, as well as the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre and the Sault Museum. It’s also being released as an e-book.

WILL HELP FOOD BANK

"Most of the proceeds that we receive from the book will probably be going towards the food bank, we're helping more and more people there every week,” McCleary said.

“That need is only going up. Having those proceeds coming in regularly as book sales continue is going to really help and it'll help keep food on our shelves."

"Whenever we do have challenges in Sault Ste. Marie we usually find a 'made in Sault Ste. Marie' solution to those problems,” Sarlo said.

“In the research, as you know, we've been having our challenges lately, and I'm a great believer in finding those made in Sault Ste. Marie solutions."
