Front-line police officers in Sault Ste. Marie are getting body cameras to record interactions and will be fully operational in the coming weeks.

The driver of a pickup truck has been charged after a hit-and-run crash in Sault Ste. Marie on the weekend, police say.

A collision at the intersection of Wellington Street East and John Street was reported to 911 around 6:30 p.m. March 1.

The 49-year-old suspect is accused of speeding through a red light, hitting another vehicle and driving through a second red light while fleeing, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said in a news release Thursday.

“No physical injuries were reported,” police added.

“The accused did not report the crash to police.”

Officers arrested the suspect around 5 p.m. Thursday.

He is charged with dangerous operation and failing to stop after an accident.

The suspect was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court May 5.
