Sault Ste. Marie — The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service says it plans to enforce the provinces five-person limit on gatherings.

In a video released by police, Chief Hugh Stevenson described how police intend to enforce the new rules.

"When we receive a complaint, we will do our best to contact people by phone, to inform them of the rules," said Stevenson.

He says police will issue a warning first and will lay "significant" charges if that warning isn’t adhered to.

"First offence that fails to comply with an order, results in a minimum of $750 fine," said Stevenson. "These are uncertain times, but by staying home and practicing social distancing, we will get through this together."
