Snow squall warning in effect for the Sault, surrounding area

An additional 10-25 cm of snow is expected in the Sault Ste. Marie area, Environment Canada said Friday in a snow squall warning.

“Reduced visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow … continuing today and tonight,” the warning said.

“Lake effect snow squalls will continue east of Lake Superior today and tonight. These snow squalls are expected to shift north of Sault Ste. Marie early this evening.”

Snow squalls can change weather from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres, Environment Canada said.

“Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow,” the warning said.

“Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Road closures are possible.”

As a result, Canada Post has issued a red delivery service alert for Sault Ste. Marie due to snow squalls and extreme conditions.

“A red service alert means that we are suspending delivery for the day and not sending our delivery agents out or recalling them,” Canada Post said.

“Delivery will resume once conditions improve and it’s safe to do so. The safety of our employees is our No. 1 priority.”
