Firefighters were called to an industrial company on Duhamel Road in the Lively area of Greater Sudbury after a chemical reaction caused a fire Wednesday afternoon.

Deputy fire chief Jesse Oshell told CTV News in a phone interview the emergency call came in about 2:30 p.m. and the closest units from Lively responded along with the hazardous materials team.

A small, contained fire happened while potassium oxide was being mixed, Oshell said.

Employees were evacuated and proper protocols were followed.

Two people who were near the product when the chemical reaction and fire started were assessed by paramedics and cleared.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

The company will be following up on the cause, Oshell said.

Firefighters were able to quickly get the fire out and make sure the product was made safe.

"When we got there, there was some smoke and winds were carrying it towards another business," Oshell said.

"Gardewine was evacuated for a short time out of caution."

The deputy fire chief said there is always a minimum of four people trained in hazardous material on shift every day.

"It is due to the great work of the hazardous materials teams that we are now taking these extra precautions on these incidents bringing a measure of safety to the community," he said.

Last week, a chemical reaction at a mining supply equipment company on Maley Drive caused some concern after a plume of orange smoke could be seen in the air.

Both the Ministries of labour and environment are investigating the one involving nitric acid at Quatro Industries.

The MOE said they do not anticipate any off-site impacts due to the chemical reaction and spill of on Jan. 11.
