L’Arche Sudbury received a $100,000 gift from a local charity Friday to continue serving those with developmental disabilities.
The organization currently operates three homes in Greater Sudbury for those with and without disabilities in the Sudbury area.
L’Arche said the plan is to use the money to open a new facility in Minnow Lake.
“It will be a multi-use facility that’s a combination of affordable housing, market housing, a community centre, beautiful grounds, gardens space and a community amongst the community of Minnow Lake,” said Jennifer McCauley, executive director.
L’Arche’s goal is to provide an inclusive space for those who live in their facilities and for those who participate in their community programs.
McCauley said the need for a unique facility was identified when speaking with other members of the community.
“Many of those people said ‘I don’t want to live in the traditional L’Arche home,’” she said.
What they really want is to have their own units, they said, but close to other people who will engage with them and welcome them.
The money was donated by the Bishop Alexander Carter Foundation, a local charity.
L’Arche has operated out of Sudbury for 40 years.
McCauley said additional funds are still needed and discussions with the government are required before the new facility can be built.
