TIMMINS – The Timmins Snowmobile Club is asking the city to open more streets to snowmobilers.
Council approved a trial last year and recently heard the club's proposal for the next stage of the plan, which would allow sleds on less-travelled streets to get from the trails to restaurants and lodgings.
"From day one, that was the main concern that snowmobilers had, is how do you get from your house downtown to the trail, there's very limited access," said Patrick Dzijacky, Timmins Snowmobile Club.
Last season the city had a trial run, opening up some streets to sled traffic, and now the club's proposal would allow sleds to travel on more designated streets.
"So we feel, not only from the tourism side but it would also grow our club with memberships too if we can get people back on their snowmobiles or buying new snowmobiles. Because now they know they can leave from their house… enjoy the amenities that the area has to offer," said Dzijacky.
Groups like Tourism Timmins and Destination Northern Ontario have been working to build up the area's snowmobile industry, and the Downtown Timmins Business Improvement Associations feels this is a step forward.
"Giving that opportunity for them to be able to not have to hook up to a trailer to be able to get to the trails is really quite an advantage and it's really a great aspect when you're looking at it from a tourism point of view," said Noelle Rinaldo, Downtown Timmins BIA.
At their last meeting, some city councillors had concerns about noise and signage but Dzijacky said responsible riders adhere to snowmobiling regulations for speed and noise and can access travel information online.
Karen Baird has family members who ride but is cautious about allowing sleds on the street.
"I don't think it's advisable. I know there's been a few accidents like, off the main roads, so I think it might just be tempting fate."
Right now, no streets are open for snowmobiles and the trails are still closed as the clubs prepares them for the winter season.
The city council is waiting for more public consultation before approving phase two of the snowmobile club's plan and will revisit it in January.
