The Ontario Provincial Police have arrested two people for theft of copper wire in Matheson in three incidents dating back to September of last year.
The duo was arrested after OPP responded at 1:30 a.m. Feb. 20 to a theft in progress on Vimy Ridge Road in Matheson.
“The suspects fled the scene, however, were located and arrested a short time later,” police said in a news release Friday.
“The investigation revealed one of the suspects was responsible for two other thefts in Matheson which occurred on Sept.14, 2024, and Feb. 14, 2025. The estimated value of the theft is approximately $50,000.”
A 56-year-old from Rochebaucourt, Que., was charged with three counts each of theft over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and mischief over $5,000.
A 47-year-old from Point Aux Outardes, Que., was charged with one count each of theft over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, mischief over $5,000 and violating probation.
Both accused were released from custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on March 13 in Timmins.
