Violent crime in Greater Sudbury increased by 11.3 per cent in 2023, police said this week, a major contributor to an overall increase in crime of 2.3 per cent in the city.
The Greater Sudbury Police Services Board meeting heard that the increase can be attributed to a rise in such crimes as attempted murder, assault, sexual assault, pointing a firearm and uttering threats.
Cases of intimate partner violence also contributed to the increase.
“Here in Greater Sudbury and a lot of municipalities across the province have declared intimate partner violence an epidemic,” said Deputy Chief Natalie Hiltz.
“And epidemic is an important term to be used here because there is a lot of intimate partner violence happening in our community, which also drives up some of the violent crime numbers.
While violent crimes spiked, property crimes were down by 2.3 per cent. And police said approximately 84 per cent of calls for service they received in 2023 were non-criminal in nature.
