A woman from Thunder Bay and a man from Atikokan have been charged following a traffic stop in which the man was located hiding in the trunk of a vehicle.

The incident took place during a traffic stop for a registration violation June 3 around 9:30 a.m. on MacKenzie Avenue in Atikokan.

“The officer determined that the driver was using a plate that belonged to a different vehicle and arrested the driver for the offence,” Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release June 4.

“Search incident to arrest discovered a small quantity of a controlled substance. The search incident to arrest expanded and a person with warrants out of both Thunder Bay and Rainy River Districts was located hiding in the trunk of the vehicle.”

Stunt driving charges

A 36-year-old woman from Thunder Bay has been charged with cocaine possession, stunt driving, driving without a permit and using a plate not authorized for the vehicle.

She was released with an Oct. 29 court date in Atikokan, and the vehicle was impounded for two weeks.

A 37-year-old man from Atikokan was charged with cocaine possession, failing to attend court and not wearing a seatbelt.

He is being held in custody and has a bail hearing in the Fort Frances Ontario Court of Justice on June 5.
