The City of Ottawa is exploring the possibility of building a new pavilion at Mooney’s Bay Beach, as the existing pavilion reaches the end of its lifespan.
The city has launched public consultations on the redesign of the pavilion, inviting the public to provide feedback on two preliminary concept options for a new beach pavilion.
The existing Mooney’s Bay Beach Pavilion was built in 1964, and includes a canteen, public washrooms/change rooms, a multi-purpose room, staff office and storage space. The pavilion operates as a three-season building.
Two preliminary concept options have been developed for a new beach pavilion, with a one-storey and two-storey option. Staff say both options could accommodate year-round usage.
The City of Ottawa released artist renderings for both the one-storey and two-storey options.
One-storey option
According to the document, the option includes a beach promenade, a water play area, a beach patio, a multi-purpose room, a lifeguard office looking towards the beach, and a food service pavilion.

The city says potential site impacts for the one-storey option include the removal of 36 trees and realigned pathways and light poles.
Two-storey option
According to the plan, the two-storey option includes a beach promenade, food service pavilion, multi-level patios, a multi-purpose room, a lifeguard office and a water play area, including a future splash pad.

The city says site impacts for a two-storey option include the removal of 18 trees and a realigned multi-use pathway and walkways.
The public is invited to fill out an online survey on the Mooney’s Bay Beach Pavilion Replacement Project feasibility study online until May 17. A public open house will be held on May 8 at Jim Durrell Recreation Centre on Walkley Road.
Mooney’s Bay is a 29-hectare park located along the Rideau River, and the city leases the space from the National Capital Commission.
